Brewing Science and Operations
Auburn University is offering an exciting new graduate study option leading to a Graduate Certificate in Brewing Science and Operations. This program is designed to prepare candidates for entry into the malting, brewing and/or distilling industries. The program offers an array of courses with emphasis in biology, microbiology, chemistry, brewing science, agronomy, facilities and operations, and business planning.
This distance education program marries traditional educational approaches with real world application leading to a state of the art interactive learning experience. To this end, the program has partnered with Oskar Blues Brewery and the Alabama Brewing Industry to showcase best practices in all aspects of the brewing industry. Oskar Blues is among the largest craft breweries in the United States and the company has won numerous awards for the quality of its brews. Oskar Blues was founded by Auburn alumnus Dale Katechis. Students attend at least one residency weekend over the course of the program at an Oskar Blues Brewery in Brevard, North Carolina or Longmont, Colorado for detailed hands-on instruction on the operation of a world class commercial craft brewery.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the Institute of Brewing and Distilling’s (IBD) General Certificate / Diploma of Brewing examinations. Located in the United Kingdom, the IBD is the world’s leading organization dedicated to the education and training needs of brewers and distillers. Following an intensive review of our program, the IBD has provided us with a memorandum of understanding which establishes that our graduates are eligible to sit for the IBD’s General Certificate in Brewing.
